Zika virus

A flavivirus transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. Zika virus was first identified in 1947 in the Zika Forest of Uganda. Virus spread slowly from Africa to Southeast Asia, then to French Polynesia with large outbreaks. Since 2015, there has been an explosive outbreak of cases of microcephaly and other congenital abnormalities seen in infants of women pregnant when infected. Zika virus and cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome following Zika virus infection throughout South America, Central America, and the Caribbean.
