Organism

Peritonitis

Primary or spontaneous (associated with nephrosis or cirrhosis) (SBP): Enterobacteriaceae (GNR) (69%), enterococci (GPC), viridans streptococci (GPC in chains), S. pneumoniae (GPC), group A streptococcus (GPC), S. aureus (GPC), anaerobes (5%).

Secondary (bowel perforation, hospital acquired, or antecedent antibiotic therapy): Enterobacteriaceae, enterococcus (GPC), Bacteroides fragilis group (GNR), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (GNR) (3–15%).

Chronic ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD): Coagulase-negative staphylococci (GPC) (43%), S. aureus (14%), Streptococcus sp. (12%), Enterobacteriaceae (14%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Corynebacterium sp. (GPR), candida (2%), aspergillus (rare), cryptococcus (rare).
