Polycythemia
Etiology
- Relative ("spurious") polycythemia
- Polycythemia vera (primary polycythemia)
- Secondary polycythemia
- Hypoxia: cardiac disease, pulmonary disease, high altitude
- Carboxyhemoglobin (smoking)
- Renal cyst or hydronephrosis
- Erythropoietin-secreting tumors (rare): renal cell or hepatocellular carcinoma, adrenal tumor, cerebellar hemangioma, uterine leiomyoma
- Abnormal hemoglobins (rare)
