Etiology

  • Increased intracranial pressure (papilledema)
  • Optic neuritis, eg, multiple sclerosis
  • Anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, eg, temporal (giant cell) arteritis
  • Severe hypertensive retinopathy
  • Central retinal vein occlusion
  • Posterior uveitis
  • Posterior scleritis
  • Optic disc drusen (pseudopapilledema)
  • Optic nerve sheath meningioma
  • Optic nerve infiltration by sarcoidosis, leukemia, or lymphoma
