- Viral or bacterial pneumonia
- Asthma
- Other causes of chronic cough in adults, eg, postnasal drip, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), tuberculosis, Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC)
- Bronchiolitis, eg, respiratory syncytial virus (children)
- Croup (children)
- Infectious mononucleosis (both may have atypical lymphocytosis)
