Etiology

  • Microvascular infarction, e.g., diabetes mellitus, hypertension
  • Wernicke’s encephalopathy
  • Increased intracranial pressure, e.g., pseudotumor cerebri
  • Tuberculous meningitis
  • Sphenoid sinusitis
  • Cavernous sinus thrombosis
  • Brainstem infarct or vertebrobasilar insufficiency
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Temporal (giant cell) arteritis
