Primary, especially Pacific islanders
Secondary (acquired hyperuricemia):
- Drugs, eg, alcohol, diuretics, low-dose aspirin, niacin, cyclosporine
- Myeloproliferative disease, multiple myeloma, hemoglobinopathy, chronic renal disease, hypothyroidism, psoriasis, sarcoidosis, lead poisoning
